Eli Stokols joins POLITICO as White House reporter

Announcement from White House Editor Sam Stein, White House Deputy Editor Eun Kim, Managing Editor, Politics and Washington, Mike Zapler and Executive Editor Dafna Linzer:

We are thrilled to announce that Eli Stokols will be joining our White House team, where he will help helm the West Wing Playbook newsletter. He will work not just within the core White House team but across the newsroom to help grow West Wing Playbook’s distinctive standing as a must-read, deeply informative news product covering the Biden administration.

There are few, if any, people we could imagine better suited for the role. Eli brings a tremendous depth of knowledge about the White House, Biden world and national politics in general. He has experience in a number of different mediums and, more importantly, is one of the best regarded colleagues in the industry.

Beyond that, he has some familiarity with POLITICO as well.

Eli covered the 2016 election for POLITICO, starting out with the Jeb Bush campaign before turning his reporting lens on Donald Trump. He’s covered the White House ever since Trump took office in 2017. For the last four and a half years, that’s been at the Los Angeles Times, his hometown paper. Prior to all that, Eli had stints at local television news outlets in Louisiana and then Denver, where he forced stories about Colorado politics and government into nightly broadcasts for many years, while also penning several long-form pieces, including for, yes, POLITICO Magazine.

But his most significant ties to POLITICO aren’t strictly professional. Eli met his now wife, Elena Schneider, in the newsroom here after he moved to Washington in 2015. They now live on Capitol Hill with their son, Charlie, spending most nights reading “Goodnight Cubs” (multiple times) and coordinating their work travel.

Eli will officially start on October 31, reporting to Sam and Eun. Please join us in welcoming him aboard once again.
