Moving into the suburbs

As major metro outlets retreat from suburban coverage, Shawnee Mission Post publisher Jay Senter finds readers willing to pay

Suburbs are losing their news despite their affluence, and Jay Senter, publisher of Shawnee Mission Post in the Kansas City metro area, saw an opportunity.

Suburban and exurban areas of major cities have seen the biggest declines in numbers of journalists and newspapers over the past two decades. Although major metros often have their highest market penetration in suburban areas, hyper-local coverage does not tend to boost a regional news outlet’s digital subscriptions and has been targeted in cutbacks.

In addition, many metro dailies are now owned by distant chains that have consolidated community advertising operations into regional centers that no longer service smaller advertisers.

In an email exchange with 2023 State of Local News Report’s George Stanley, Senter discussed how the Post is managing to fill the need for suburban news reporting.
