States Newsroom receives grants from J.M. Kaplan Fund, Local News Hub and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

As an independent nonprofit organization, States Newsroom relies on grants and donations to make our statehouse reporting possible.

Caitlin Sigal, States Newsroom’s development director, is highlighting several recent gifts:

  • The Concord Group of the J.M. Kaplan Fund awarded a $50,000 grant to support a two-day, in-person new media training for our reporters. In October, about 20 of our reporters from state capitals across the country will gather in Washington, D.C., to grow their skills on producing vertical video, developing a presence on social media platforms and building relationships with other content creators in their communities.
  • The Local News Hub awarded a $400,000 grant over two years to expand our reporting on women in politics in five newsrooms: NC Newsline, Ohio Capital Journal, Oregon Capital Chronicle, Tennessee Lookout and Utah News Dispatch. We will be closely following women candidates for local and state office in the upcoming midterm elections, while also reporting on the unique challenges they face in their career and the issues they champion for their communities.
  • The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awarded a $250,000 grant to support our coverage of changes to Medicaid and SNAP benefits, as well as the rollout of the Rural Health Transformation program funds in our Idaho, Kentucky and West Virginia outlets. This coverage is critical in these states where many residents are seeing drastic changes to benefits and need reliable, consistent coverage on how to navigate access to health care, especially in rural parts of the state.

States Newsroom updates its list of donors regularly on its website, identifying any donor who has contributed more than $1,000 since the organization launched as an independent 501(c)3 in 2019. States Newsroom retains full editorial independence and none of our donors influence our news coverage. For more information, you can see our ethics policy here.

About States Newsroom:

States Newsroom is the nation’s largest nonprofit news organization. We shine a light on policy and politics in state capitals around the nation and we provide that coverage for free. In an era of rampant disinformation and news deserts, we provide nonpartisan coverage of the state issues that most affect people’s daily lives.

Leading studies cite States Newsroom as key to filling the void in coverage left by staffing cuts at legacy media outlets. According to one study, the overall percentage of reporters working for nonprofit newsrooms in the statehouse press corps has more than tripled since 2014 and now makes up the largest portion of statehouse reporters in 10 states and the second largest in 17 states.

We run — or partner with — news outlets in all 50 state capitals.

We fully fund newsrooms in 39 states, each with its own website. They are:
