It is with a heavy heart that we, the New Mexico Press Association Board of Directors, inform the NMPA membership that Sammy Lopez, our executive director, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 6. His family was with him at the hospital, after having suffered a stroke the day before.
Sammy was hired as executive director of the New Mexico Press Association in the summer of 2019. He had been a member throughout his career, as well as a 2010 NMPA Hall of Fame inductee.
He was always an advocate and champion for the newspaper industry.
