The Tri-City Record, a newspaper covering northwestern New Mexico, is beginning today. The newspaper will be offered in tabloid format five days a week and published daily online at TriCityRecordNM.com.

The Tri-City Record, including its contributing staff of 12 newsroom and advertising representatives, is based in Farmington, New Mexico, and the newspaper will be printed in Santa Fe. The Record’s publisher is David Cook and the senior editor is Trent Stephens.

“There are increasing connections between southwest Colorado and northwest New Mexico in news topics and advertising needs,” says Richard G. Ballantine, board chair of Ballantine Communications Inc., owner of The Tri-City Record.

Cook is a graduate of Fort Lewis College and the publisher and owner of the Aspen Daily News.  Stephens is a graduate of the University of Colorado Boulder and senior editor of the Durango Herald and The Journal in Cortez. He also has worked in Colorado at the Rocky Mountain News in Denver and The Gazette in Colorado Springs.

“We’re excited to start working for the people of Northern New Mexico,” said Stephens. “We admire their strong sense of community, their dedication and commitment to family and their continuing efforts to improve their cities. We want to be part of their daily lives.”

The Record will cover topics important to the residents of the greater San Juan County region, including economic development, water, education, sports, and city and county governments in Farmington, Aztec, Bloomfield, Kirtland, Shiprock and the Navajo Nation.

The initial print distribution of 7,000 copies will be available at more than 75 central locations at no charge. Home and business delivery is planned for the future.

San Juan County is the fifth-largest population center in the state and the Record will serve more than 120,000 people. As part of Ballantine Communications, Inc., the Record benefits from its existing media, The Durango Herald in Durango, Colorado, and The Journal in Cortez, Colorado, and their digital distribution.
