Ozy Media CEO fights fraud conviction, seeks new trial

The founder of the now-defunct Ozy Media is attempting to reverse his wire fraud and identity theft convictions, arguing that a federal judge erroneously told jurors a good faith finding was not enough to acquit him.

In July, a Brooklyn jury found Carlos Watson guilty of lying to investors about the digital media startup’s finances, inflating its audience numbers and conspiring to impersonate other media executives in his attempts to keep the company afloat.

The charges, conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, carry up to a penalty of 37 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 18.
