This week, the San Francisco Chronicle welcomed reporters Molly Burke and Maliya Ellis to the newsroom as part of the Hearst Journalism Fellowship.

The 25-year-old multimedia training program places early-career journalists in top Hearst newspaper newsrooms for two yearlong rotations. During the program, fellows report a variety of stories, participate in projects and receive mentorship from newsroom colleagues.

Burke joined the Chronicle in the second year of her fellowship, having spent her first rotation covering New York state government in Albany, N.Y., for the Times Union. At the Chronicle, Burke will start on the politics team, reporting to politics editor Sara Libby, before moving to the climate team, where she’ll work with editor Kate Galbraith, then switching to breaking news on the night team with assistant metro editor Suzanne Espinosa.

Ellis is starting her fellowship at the Chronicle, where she’ll begin covering breaking news on the night shift with Espinosa before moving to the climate team. Ellis will spend a year reporting in San Francisco before continuing her fellowship in another Hearst newspaper newsroom.
