The Washington Post has announced the addition of media industry veteran Liza Pluto as its new director of communications.

Pluto joins The Post from Mars, Incorporated, a family-owned, global leader in pet care, snacking and food, where she served as media relations and issues manager on the Global External Communications Team and activated media strategies to shape Mars’s corporate reputation.

“We’re thrilled to have Liza join us,” said Chief Communications Officer Kathy Baird. “Her proven track record of elevating and showcasing high-profile talent, paired with her contagious passion for the media industry, make her an exceptional fit for the future of communications at The Washington Post.”

Her experience includes eight years working in media relations for leading news organizations, including at MSNBC as media relations manager overseeing daily communications and implementing press campaigns for MSNBC's "Morning Joe," weekend programming, and MSNBC Films. Prior to MSNBC, she was part of the communications team at PBS, publicizing the network's news & public affairs programming. She began her career in news at CNN. During her five-year tenure at the network, she managed press initiatives for “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer,” “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” “Erin Burnett OutFront,” and more, as well as large-scale publicity efforts and events for CNN's presidential debates and town halls.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join The Washington Post,” shared Pluto. “I look forward to amplifying the world-class journalism, talent and brand of an iconic institution I’ve long respected and trusted as my go-to source for news.”

Pluto earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona in Communication and holds a master’s degree of Professional Studies in Strategic Public Relations from George Washington University’s Graduate School of Political Management. She will be based in Washington.
