We’re very happy to announce that Ellen Francis will become Brussels bureau chief, a pivotal role on a team covering a changing Europe. With responsibilities that include covering the European Union and NATO, Ellen’s reporting will focus on the challenges facing European powers unnerved by Russia’s war in Ukraine and facing questions about their partnership with the United States.
With a strong record of reporting from the Middle East and from Europe, Ellen brings the speed, versatility and ambition we are seeking in our coverage from the European capital. Since joining The Post in 2021 as a breaking-news reporter in London, Ellen has demonstrated remarkable fluency in covering the most urgent stories of our times, including the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban, the war in Ukraine, the war in Gaza and spillover conflicts across the Middle East since the Hamas attack on Israel.
In her new role, Ellen will work in close partnership with other members of The Post’s Europe team and with colleagues based in the Washington newsroom, particularly with members of our national security team. She will also take on a central role in our coverage of France as it wrestles with seismic political change.
She began her journalism career with Reuters in Beirut, where she became deputy bureau chief and reported from Jordan, Egypt, Japan and from Syria on the battle against the Islamic State. She graduated from the American University of Beirut with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and earned a master’s at the Columbia University School of Journalism. In addition to English, she speaks fluent Arabic and French.
Ellen will relocate to Brussels and will start in her new role on Aug. 5.
