Announcement from Multiplatform Editing Chief Courtney Rukan:

I am thrilled to announce that Brian Cleveland has been named deputy multiplatform editing chief.

Brian will help lead a team of more than 65 copy editors who are responsible for the vast majority of newsroom content, as well as the News Service. During his almost decade at The Post, Brian has pushed the MPE desk to adopt streamlined workflows and technology. This is a richly deserved promotion that reflects his dedication to our mission.

Even before being named senior editor in 2019, Brian routinely took on sweeping tasks such as implementing the newsroom-wide adoption of Tansa, customizing that software program and tirelessly training reporters and editors both in groups and individually. He has also been part of the brain trust on enterprise production — assigning countless projects to the right editors and overseeing that work to publication. Brian will continue to be heavily involved in our Methode-to-Ellipsis transition and oversee the Post Stylebook.

Brian is a master of finding efficiencies that make other people’s work lives easier, and he leads with humanity and balance. Brian is a captain you look to in a storm, the ballast who keeps everyone calm and always has a plan when things go sideways. He is a leader who keeps us moving forward but also the person you can turn to when moving forward is difficult.

In addition to his work at The Post, Brian taught copy editing for three years as an adjunct lecturer at the University of Maryland and still thinks of ways to make teaching grammar interesting.

Before coming to The Post, Brian was the copy desk chief at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk and a copy editor at the Duluth News Tribune in Minnesota.

Brian graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in journalism. He has lived in numerous parts of the country but prefers places near mountains or oceans.

In his free time, Brian enjoys hiking, reading, video games and hard-earned naps. He lives in Falls Church with his girlfriend. He has already transitioned to his new role.

Please join me in congratulating Brian.
