NABJ announces 2024 Hall of Fame inductees and Special Honors recipients

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is proud to announce its 2024 Hall of Fame inductees and 2024 Special Honors recipients. 

Awards will be presented during the #NABJ24 Convention & Career Fair in Chicago, July 31 – Aug. 4. 

The Hall of Fame Induction and Luncheon, powered by the PGA TOUR & National Education Association, will be held Friday, Aug. 2, at Noon CT.

Special Honors will be announced during the Opening Ceremony, powered by The Joyce Foundation, on Wednesday, July 31, at 6 p.m. CT, and the Salute to Excellence Awards Gala, powered by Walmart, on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 6 p.m. CT. 

2024 Hall of Fame Inductees

NABJ will pay homage to the following legendary Black journalists and communicators who have made outstanding contributions to the news and media industries:

  • Vanessa Williams, a former NABJ President (1997–1999) and longtime journalist who recently retired from daily journalism after 27 years at The Washington Post. Williams served as the Post’s deputy national politics editor and, prior to that, served 12 years as a reporter and writer at the Philadelphia Inquirer. 
  • Barbara Ciara, a former NABJ president (2007–2009) and multiple Emmy award-winning broadcast journalist who closed out her career with 50 years in print and broadcast news. Ciara recently retired from WTKR News 3 as managing editor and evening anchor.
  • Paula Williams Madison, the chairman and CEO of Madison Media Management LLC and 88 Madison Media Works Inc. She is the former executive vice president and fhief diversity officer at NBCUniversal and was president and general manager of NBC4 Los Angeles and Los Angeles Regional GM for NBCU’s Telemundo TV stations. 
  • Retha Hill, the executive director of the New Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. She previously served as founding vice president for content for BET Interactive and was a founding editor of WashingtonPost.com.
  • Art Norman, the 2021 recipient of the NABJ Lifetime Achievement Award, is a special contributor to NBC 5 News. Norman came to NBC 5 News as a general assignment reporter in July 1982. He has won numerous awards for his reporting and began his iconic broadcasting career in 1969 as a television engineer at WCCB-TV in Charlotte.
  • Dr. Milbert O. Brown, Jr., a 2001 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for Explanatory Reporting winner (for his contributions to the Chicago Tribune team), has been honored as one of the top 90 Black photographers in the United States as a member of the “Gordon Parks Ninety.” He is a former academic representative of the NABJ board of directors.
  • Alexis Yancey, the creator of Prayer Works! TV and ByDivineDesign. Yancey is an accomplished, Emmy-winning network television news producer. In 1981, she was elected NABJ’s first female vice president-broadcast. She has produced NABJ’s Authors Showcase and Outstanding Book Awards since 2018.
