The Allbritton Journalism Institute (AJI), the educational incubator for aspiring journalism talent, today launched its own nonprofit news publication, NOTUS, short for News of the United States, based in Washington, D.C. Led by Publisher Robert Allbritton and Editor in Chief Tim Grieve, and staffed by experienced journalists and trained AJI fellows, NOTUS will produce daily original reporting on government, politics and the 2024 campaign with the fresh eyes of newcomers and the expertise of veterans. The digital- first newsroom is designed to put AJI’s teachings to work by fostering best-in-class training and mentorship within an active newsroom delivering meaningful insights on the inner workings of Washington. NOTUS will deliver scoops and in-depth analysis on the consequential decisions made in Washington and how they reverberate across the U.S. and the world.

The newsroom is spearheaded by a slate of renowned editors who previously guided reporters in top national newsrooms, including at Axios, Buzzfeed News, Politico, The Washington Post Magazine, The National Journal, Vanity Fair and more. Grieve served as the founding editor in chief of both Politico Pro and Protocol following decades as both a writer and editor at news organizations in California and Washington D.C. He also serves as the executive director of the Allbritton Journalism Institute, founded by Allbritton in May 2023.

Allbritton said: “I have always believed that the best way to build skills in journalism is by doing. And better yet, doing under the guidance of top journalists in their field. At AJI, we are committed to creating the premiere journalism training environment and advancing democracy through quality journalism. That is why we built NOTUS, a dedicated newsroom that will break news and lead conversation, but also has the time and capacity for learning and mentorship built in.”

“How news organizations choose to cover elections — and how journalists are taught to cover politics — is not only crucial for readers but has resounding impacts within our society. I can’t think of a more important time to embark on our mission of training the next generation of leading journalists,” said Allbritton.

“I’ve been so impressed and so inspired as I’ve watched our fellows work one-on-one with the accomplished reporters and editors on our team,” Grieve said. “Even before the launch of our site, the work they’ve done in the classroom and in the stories we’ve published via the NOTUS newsletter has been marked by curiosity, care and a real commitment to honest journalism. They’re proving that the AJI formula works. With the launch of the site and the daily newsletter, we’re excited to share a valuable news product that serves our community while continuing our mission of journalism education.”

Audiences can connect with NOTUS’s coverage via its dedicated website, notus.org, daily email newsletters, notus.org/newsletter, and across social platforms at @NOTUSreports. Meet the NOTUS team here and reach out with tips or comments by emailing editor@notus.org.
