Newsday Recognized as 2012 Newspaper of Distinction by the New York State Associated Press Association

Melville, NY, October 4, 2012 – Newsday has been honored with the 2012 Newspaper of Distinction award by the New York State Associated Press Association (NYSAPA). The prestigious award, which recognizes the newspaper that exemplifies the best traditions of journalistic initiative and quality news judgment, reporting, writing, news photos, graphics and presentation, was presented at the annual state AP awards banquet on Wednesday, October 3, at the Holiday Inn in Saratoga Springs. Since the inception of the NYSAPA Newspaper of Distinction award in 1998, Newsday has received this distinguished accolade nine times.

“Newsday is proud to be recognized by the New York State Associated Press Association as the 2012 Newspaper of Distinction for the third year in a row, and we want to thank the New York State Associated Press Association for recognizing the quality of our journalism,” said Deborah Henley, Editor of Newsday. “This honors the dedication and talent of all the journalists at Newsday who bring valuable news and information to Long Islanders all day, every day.”

In addition, Newsday was honored with a total of 19 NYSAPA media awards across 15 categories, including Continuing Coverage, Features, Art/Entertainment Writing and Online Content, for excellence in writing, presentation and graphics.
 
In 2012, Newsday has been recognized with many esteemed journalism honors, including 39 media awards from the Press Club of Long Island; two awards from the Deadline Club; two honorable mentions from the Society of Features Journalism’s Excellence in Features Writing contest; one first place honor from the New York Association of Black Journalists; four awards from the New York Press Club; recognition as a finalist in the National Association of Black Journalists Salute to Excellence Awards; one award in the National Press Photographer Association’s Best of Photojournalism contest; two New York Emmy Awards; two awards in the Society of the Silurians Excellence in Journalism Awards Competition; recognition as a finalist in the Photojournalism category of the Scripps Howard Awards; seven winning images in the New York Press Photographers Association “Year in Pictures” contest; first place, second place and honorable mention in the National Press Photographers Association Northern Short Course contest; a first place award in the Pictures of the Year International contest; Top 10 honors and an honorable mention in the Associated Press Sports Editors awards; three winning entries in the New York Publishers Association Awards for Excellence competition; and recognition for NFL columnist Bob Glauber as the 2011 New York Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscaster and Sportswriter Association.
