The Philadelphia Inquirer joined a select group earlier this month when it launched a new, subscription-only website to run in tandem with the free site it has maintained since the late 1990s.

Operating multiple websites has become a minor trend for metropolitan newspapers, with publishers in Boston, Houston, San Francisco and Philadelphia employing the strategy.
